The benefits associated with the population's participation in sport also lead to long-term sustainable demographic change. The extent to which the effect of economic, socio-demographic, and environmental characteristics on the physical activities within settlement areas is subject to a spatial relationship and which parameters characterize this is a particular challenge due to many potential influencing factors. The objective of the present study is to investigate the determinants for regional-, urban- and non-urban-specific disparities in physical activity among the adult population throughout Austria. Using the approximated data for running and cycling activities at the municipality level, we analyze the effects of the selected economic, socio-demographic and environmental features. The rationale of the study is that the associated effects can be both area-specific and cross-area-specific and that they are reflected differently for social target groups and types of physical activity. The results obtained show a high effect of educational and real estate characteristics, with land price and the shares of renters and homeowners, having the highest significance in the spatial models. The results of the study may be of interest for targeted and sustainable measures in economic and socio-demographic area.
